?:abstract
  • This chapter explores why racial mixedness is not measured in Germany, and how quantitative surveys allow for the identification of people of mixed origin. Historically, Mischling were considered outcasts. In addition, the introduction of the category of race in the German Census during the time of the Third Reich and its use explains why the measurement of racial mixedness, ethnic registration, and statistics, and even Censuses were not an option in post-war (West) Germany. In parallel, it has long been impossible to identify mixed people as defined by their parental migration background in large-scale data sets. This is rooted in the fact that migrants were considered to be temporary workers in the country, and that the national myth did not fit with the reality of German state borders until reunification. Finally, the fear of being categorized remains today, and quantitative surveys where migration background is queried are still scarce. Even now, the few quantitative surveys that do allow the identification of mixed people do not take ethnicity into account, but at best provide the citizenship of parents, and less often their country of birth or migration status.
