?:abstract
  • Abortion has long been considered one of the typical points where the differences between conservative and liberal social attitudes are clearly visible, and moreover where patriarchy, authoritarianism and conservatism overlap considerably. In this chapter, we analyze public opinion data of Slovenian citizens on their attitudes toward the right to abortion in a time perspective. We place the opinions of Slovenian citizens in a broader European and global context and profile pro- and anti-abortion advocates and opponents. According to opinion polls, Slovenia is among the most liberal countries in Europe in terms of attitudes toward abortion. A comparison over time shows that attitudes toward abortion in Slovenia liberalized between 1969 and 1990 and have remained consistently positive to the present day. This proves that public opinion in Slovenia has a stable liberal orientation, regardless of the transition processes and political upheavals of the last 30 years since Slovenian independence. However, public opinion among younger respondents is changing and becoming less tolerant of the right to abortion. The correlation between expressed religiosity and attitudes toward the right to abortion is also becoming statistically more significant. (xsd:string)
