?:abstract
  • This chapter analyses the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Russian Orthodox Church, considering changes in both church–state and church–parish relationships in 2020–2021. It argues that the church's established socio-political and institutional roles were challenged in the face of the global health crisis. The usual strategy of reliance on the Russian secularised majority was not as effective in the context of the pandemic and showed the vulnerability of the established ‘new symphony’ of church and state, despite the fact that the church was predominantly acting in the forefront of state policy. The turbulence of the pandemic years has confronted the church with forced changes, such as in the digitalisation of the church's experience, and has also demonstrated the need to look for new formats to communicate its decisions, both to the flock and to the clergy.
