?:abstract
  • This chapter provides a comprehensive examination of the survey data recycling (SDR) approach for ex post harmonization of cross-national survey data, which were developed to address the need for a broader comparative data infrastructure and methodology for the rapidly expanding field of ex post harmonization. The SDR approach enhances systematic investigation of methodological biases in the source survey data and offers a harmonization workflow that increases flexible secondary use of the new, harmonized dataset. We specifically discuss the application of SDR in creating a multicountry, multiyear database for research on political participation, social capital, and wellbeing, referred to as the SDR database v.2.0 (SDR2). SDR2 comprises harmonized information from 23 international survey projects, covering over 4.4 million respondents from 156 countries in the period 1966?2017. In addition to providing substantive target variables, SDR2 offers methodological indicators that capture source survey quality, preserve source information, and flag harmonization decisions. We highlight main challenges faced in the harmonization process, provide insights into the SDR Portal, which helps researchers understand the structure, availability, and capacity of SDR2, and emphasize the importance of accurate documentation in ensuring transparency and facilitating data analyses. The chapter concludes by encouraging researchers to maximize user flexibility of datasets harmonized ex post and suggests the usefulness of the SDR approach for future ex post harmonization projects.
