  • Skills development is an integral part of the concepts of lifelong learning and development over the life course. Empirical findings show that skills are developed not only in childhood and adolescence but are also of central importance in adulthood. Adopting a cross-national comparative or a social-differentiation perspective, the present essays describe on a representative basis the state of skills development in the residential population in Germany aged 16–65 years and 66–80 years. It must be asked whether, and if so how, further education practitioners and educational policy makers will incorporate these new findings into their formative actions.
