  • Despite the ratification of the European Union’s (EU) Lisbon Treaty containing the fundamental rights charter as binding instrument for rights attainment, in recent years civil society groups have articulated a concern with the loss of rights for EU citizens and residents. This article asks to what extent the provision of social, civil and fundamental rights in the EU has been influenced by the economic crises affecting large parts of the Union and if indeed the structural processes of liberalization in the single market and EU integration have negatively impacted upon the public perception of rights promotion and maintenance. Using comparative Eurobarometer data and selected country examples, it compares how the public and governments of different member states mediate the threats to the social and more generally, human rights previously associated with the European social model, and draws conclusion for the legitimacy of rights claims by civil society groups and national governments vis-à-vis the EU, who finds itself in the position of being part creator and part solution to said problems.
