?:abstract
  • The article examines current discussions on some of the global ecological challenges of our time among Orthodox Christian circles in Bulgaria, aiming to assess their role is in the overall debates in the country in this field. In order to explain the lack of a very active engagement of Orthodox Christians in Bulgaria, the specific discussions on ecology and the environment are put in the context of the recent history of the Eastern Orthodox Church in the country and some of the main challenges it faces in the contemporary world. The article looks in more detail at different positions of Bulgarian Orthodox thinkers and opinion leaders. The main focus of the article are two recent television debates which could illustrate growing awareness in the last few years about ecological issues and the willingness of some Orthodox Christians from various backgrounds to take a more active stance on a number of the acute ecological problems. The text analyzes as well the position of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, the biggest religious organisation in the country, which noted the ecological problems in some of its official strategic documents that were published recently. The article also makes remarks on some of the reactions to international Christian engagements with the ecological challenges of our time. Noticing the quite limited number of Bulgarian publications which are solely dedicated to ecological questions, the article touches upon some of the theological dimensions of the views of Eastern Orthodox Christians. The article suggests that there exists a consensus on the significance of the current environmental challenges for society. In spite of the fact that the Orthodox perspective on environmental problems has been rarely promoted very actively so far, indications of growing interest and a willingness for a more active involvement suggest that the Eastern Orthodox view on environmental problems could play a more substantial role in future Bulgarian debates.
