  • "In this paper, we show some descriptive and comparative analysis between Germany and Japan. The progress towards information society is rapid in the whole world-wide scale recent days. International comparative view with Nation Wide General Social Survey (NGSS) is important to understand these worldwide phenomena. In contrast to the United States where led in the information technology revolution, two advanced countries, Germany in Europe and Japan in Asia which both succeeded in rapid economic recovery after the World War II, are important as a comparative object. JIS 2001 relied on the German General Social Survey (ALLBUS) for the comparison (Terwey 2000). Though the year when the survey fieldwork was carried out is 3 years later, the JIS 2001 survey is designed for comparison on several aspects of variables with ALLBUS 1998. The ALLBUS 1998 and JIS 2001 have various comparable items on leisure and social activities. We measured respondents' leisure activities and social activities in the form of informal social interaction, participation and community involvement. In order to compare the degree to which the social activities are widely seen in both societies, we compare relative frequency distributions and cross tabulations by gender and age for selected variables in the following sections."
