  • Elections in many Western democracies have seen a rise in the share of so-called late deciders in recent elections. Germany is no exception from this development. However, at the same time, more and more voters do not show up at the polling place on Election Day any more, but cast an absentee ballot days or even weeks before the election. Although 24.3 percent of all voters in the German federal election 2013 cast an absentee ballot, (German) electoral research has ignored this substantial group for a long time. This contribution will focus on socio-demographic and attitudinal characteristics as well as political behavior of absentee voters in comparison with those voters who cast their ballot at a polling place on Election Day. Main differences between absentee voters and polling place voters are related to socio-demographic characteristics: Postal voters are better off, live in urban areas and smaller households, are better educated, and come from West Germany. Women are also more likely to use absentee voting than men. Political attitudes play no consistent role for the explanation of absentee voting. (xsd:string)
