?:abstract
  • "In this study, we will focus our attention on the the politics of three countries, France, England, and Germany. These nations represent the three dominant patterns of religious politics that are found in the region. The distinctions that we have in mind are twofold. The first is among Catholic-dominated countries (France), Protestant-dominated countries (England), and religiously mixed countries (Germany). The second distinction is among nations with a tradition of anticlericalism and strict church-state separation (France), those with a state church (England), and those where the state accommodates more than one religious tradition (Germany). We will begin our analysis by looking at the demographic data on church membership and involvement in the three countries to determine the extent to which securalism has undermined traditional religious practice. We turn next to the institutional context that shapes how religious politics occurs in each nation. The religious makeup of each nation and the resolution of church-state issues centuries ago provide the framework through which religious issues become politicized and resolved in contemporary issues, immigration and education, which demonstrate both the relevance of religion in politics and the significance of contrasting patterns of church-state relation. The immigration of Muslims and other religious minorities has threatened inherited church-state practices and made religion more relevant, not less, to the political debate in each nation. The conflict over state support for religious schools and religious instruction in state-run schools, on the other hand, exposes most clearly the secular challenges to religion."
