  • "The major objective of the present research is to examine the long-standing theoretical proposition that hostility toward minority groups and discrimination are likely to rise with relative size of the minority population. Using data from The German General Social Survey (1996) we examine the extent to which anti-foreigner sentiments are affected by actual versus perceived size of the foreign population across 59 districts. The analysis does not support the theoretical expectation that actual size is likely to increase anti-foreigner sentiments. Perceived size, however, is associated with anti-foreigner attitudes and, as expected, the higher the perceived size, the more pronounced are the anti-foreigner sentiments. Further analysis reveals that the discrepancy between perceived and actual size is strongly associated with attitudes toward foreigners - the wider the "overperception", the more pronounced anti-foreign sentiments are.
