?:abstract
  • It is important for democratic societies that people can trust the media. This is especially true in times of multiple crises. Research shows that general trust decreases in crises caused by institutional actors, but can increase in times of exogenous catastrophes and can therefore be strongly context- and culture-dependent, as international panel surveys such as Eurobarometer do demonstrate. Based on distinctions of the prevailing European media systems, I will use five selected countries as well as aggregated EU longitudinal data to explore the questions which influences the crises have on general institutional as well as media trust and which individual characteristics and attitudes are being furthermore influenced. The descriptive results illustrate not only different trust levels across countries (Sweden very high trust values vs. Hungary very low), but also differences in long-term dynamics. The (weak) effects emphasize the strong correlation between general and media trust across countries. Based on the regression analyses that were conducted, no generalizing indicators of trust in Europe can be identified. However, the analysis makes clear that political attitudes such as satisfaction with democracy and efficacy are more relevant for trust than age or education. (xsd:string)
