?:abstract
  • Religious groups could play a major role in enabling the world’s societies and individuals to address climate change as they are major social institutions with economic, institutional and political resources and could mobilise millions of adherents. However, research examining the effect of religion on climate change concerns found that Christians and in particular Protestants are less concerned about climate change than the non-religious. This study extends the existing research by exploring the relationship between membership of three religious affiliations – Catholics, Protestants and Muslims – and climate change concern in Europe using data from the 2008 European Values Study. Applying ordered logistic regression models revealed that Catholics, Protestants and Muslims are less likely to be highly concerned about climate change compared with non-religious respondents. This effect is mediated by right-wing political ideology for Protestants and Catholics but not for Muslims. Further analysis showed that the effect of being religious is weaker for individuals who are altruistically minded. Even though religions become more pro-environmental and engaged with climate change and its impacts, these results suggest that adherents fail to identify with this issue. More research is needed to draw practical implications and help religious institutions to find effective strategies to integrate adherents in the fight against climate change. (xsd:string)
