?:abstract
  • During the corona lockdown in March and April 2020, heads of state around the world relied on the invocation of national cohesion, using nationally different conventions to create community. The federal government of Germany and the German political elites successfully opted for a consensus-oriented style of communication, which – reinforced within the echo chamber of the media – performatively constituted a "New We". The high level of approval of the German population for government action can also be attributed to this effective communication. Using a corpus of politicians' speeches and press reports, the article analyzes this communication strategy and the value orientations it explicitly referred to. The German style of communication is then contrasted with that of French President Macron in his four speeches during the lockdown period and with the failure of a we-performance in the Spanish political discourse characterized by polarizing, confrontational crispación. The question is also raised as to whether the corona crisis can contribute transnationally to a revival of democracy that appeals more strongly to civil society. (xsd:string)
