?:abstract
  • Using AID:A 2019 data (Kuger, Prein, Linberg et al., 2020), this paper examines the role of motivational factors in the political participation of young people. The theoretical framework is the Civic Voluntarism Model (Verba et al., 1995), which suggests three sets of factors to explain political engagement: resources, motivation and recruitment networks. Regression analyses are used to examine these factors, focusing on motivation. This paper broadens the motivational dimension by including latent anti-democratic authoritarian attitudes, which can diminish the willingness to participate. The analyses show that motivation plays a central role among the factors, both in election turnout and in unconventional political participation. Political interest has a strong positive and anti-democratic authoritarian attitudes have a strong negative correlation with both forms of participation. (xsd:string)
