  • The chapter analyzes the essential characteristics of subjective poverty/well-being in the rural area of today's Romania. The specificity of the approach lies, first of all, in the multiple comparisons it promotes concerning rural Romania versus other rural areas in the European Union. Secondly, the approach works, for the first time, with survey data from Eurobarometer 97.5 of 2022, on topics related to the subjective poverty of the rural population. For the picture to be as close as possible to the real complexity, the analysis of the survey data is doubled by an analysis of objective/behavioral poverty at the level of the communes in the country. Poverty in rural Romania appears to be very close in profile and intensity to that in Bulgaria, Slovakia, Greece, Italy and Portugal. The people left behind in rural Romania are mainly elderly people from isolated communes, far from large cities, from poorly developed NUTS 2 regions, and dissatisfied with the quality of medical services in the country. The causal/prediction profile of subjective poverty in rural Romania comes closest to that of subjective poverty in the former communist countries of Central Europe. The analysis models that we used are validated by multiple l comparisons and by analyses of the sensitivity of the results when changing some methodological sequences. (xsd:string)
