?:abstract
  • Fair pay is a prime part of fairness in society. To assess universal equal pay in that wider framework, changes to the individual wage distribution are set against those in the household income distribution, in a rough simulation for the average European country. First, uniform pay will benefit additional earnings in higher-income households and batter single earners. Households’ working-time inequality will take center stage. It may rise, depending more on personal characteristics, and put the lowering of inequality into doubt. Second, high-educated pay will plummet, and so will top - 10% incomes. The ethics of such inequality reduction can be questioned for its selectivity (capital incomes unaffected) and for the potential rationing of individual access to higher education. As a standalone measure, universal equal pay seems a suboptimal, possibly counterproductive, path towards a more equal society. (xsd:string)
