?:abstract
  • Media psychology and related disciplines have recently contributed a large body of theoretical and empirical work explaining how narrative accounts affect real-world attitudes and beliefs. Lacking in the literature, however, are investigations that attempt to link narrative engagement with identity formulation. This mixed methods study attempted to fill this gap by examining the effects of media exposure on national identification among adolescents, using the historically based musical theater piece Hamilton as the medium. Based on an understanding of social identity and narrative engagement, the study surveyed 11th-grade students (N =541) in selected public high schools in three major metropolitan areas over two periods in Fall 2017. The quantitative portion of the study employed a difference-in-differences (DiD) design that compared changes in self-reported American identification before and after attendance at the live performance of Hamilton with those of an explicit comparison group at similar times. Though data neglected to support the hypothesis that attendance at the live performance would lead to an increase in American identification, students who were more engaged with the narrative showed both higher measures of American identity and ethnic identity. Exploratory analyses also highlighted that participation in the Hamilton Educational Program (EduHam), not attendance at the live performance alone, predicted heightened American identity. Additionally, a qualitative inquiry helped illustrate how student participants internalized and articulated themes related to national identity after exposure to the musical and accompanying educational program. Taken together, the results suggest that targeted educational programs surrounding a historically based narrative may have a greater impact on national identity salience and development than media exposure alone.
