?:abstract
  • This chapter explores the relevance of social cues for voting behavior in Germany. We focus on candidate voting (first vote) in the German federal elections of 2009 and 2013. In the next section, we discuss the general role of social cues in electoral behavior and address in particular the significance of political sophistication, declining party identification, campaigns in low information contests, and the peculiarities of the German case. From this discussion we derive four core hypotheses. The third section discusses the merged candidate-voter data and addresses issues of operationalization, while the fourth section presents the empirical findings. (xsd:string)
