?:abstract
  • Family patterns have changed since the 1960s in Scandinavia and the 1970s in Western Europe. Marriage and fertility began being postponed with a delay in Greece (since 1980). Cohabitation and extramarital childbearing were very low until the first half of the 2000s in this Mediterranean country. However, behaviors seem to be gradually converging with the western European ones since the mid-2000s, as younger generations’ values, lifestyles, and aspirations in Greece differ slightly from those in other parts of Northern and Western Europe. Based on four consecutive surveys (N=764) of students’ attitudes toward marriage (and cohabitation), an exploratory data analysis allows the identification of specific factors shaping beliefs and attitudes toward marriage in Greek society in the mid-2000s (i.e., a period before the economic crisis and before major legislative transformations that facilitated divorce and introduced the registered partnership for heterosexual and homosexual couples) and the 2010s (the years of severe economic recession and increase in divorce rates, extramarital childbearing, and cohabitation). The results demonstrated that the Greek society is becoming less traditional, and the influence of social norms, family pressures, and religious doctrines on young adults’ family decisions is slowly fading. Young adults postpone marriage (and childbearing) and show a greater preference for cohabitation than older generations. In addition, young women interviewed in the 2010s are less in favor of marriage than those participating in the 2000s survey. Moreover, marriage still seems to be connected with childbearing in Greece, as those who wish to experience parenthood more frequently prefer marriage. Religion still exerts some positive influence on attitudes toward marriage, while individualistic values seem to play a crucial role concerning the intention to get married. Finally, the lack of welfare state policies that efficiently protect family and facilitate the reconciliation of family and professional life is an important element taken into account by young people in their decision to get married and create a family.
