  • "The book contributes to several debates. On a practical level, it documents the difficulty of merging the two parts of Germany into one truly unified nation. Because it is the first comprehensive study to examine several democratic values that are vital to the operation of a democratic system and a market economy, the book indicates where Germans drifted apart and where they actually converged over time. Although western Germans dominate the vast majority of institutions in Germany, the persisting East-West differences over ideological values have important consequences for the political process. The debate over constitutional changes at the federal and state levels displays these value differences, as does the success of the reformed socialist party - the PDS - in eastern Germany."
