?:abstract
  • A population health approach recognizes that many factors can affect the health of a population. One of the most important of these is the socio-economic environment. As a 1996 draft discussion paper by the Canadian Public Health Association reports, “The evidence points to the socioeconomic environment as a powerful and potentially modifiable health-determining factor and public policy as an instrument for changing this environment” (CPHA 1997: v). More and more research demonstrates that social, demographic and economic factors and practices affect the health of a population. The relevant literature includes studies that have explored the link between the health of a population and such factors as income, education, occupation, marital status, family structure, urban or rural residency, gender, housing tenure, geographical location and immigration.
