?:abstract
  • This chapter examines civic values in Hungary after the fall of communism based on data from the European Values Study (EVS). Hungarian civic values were compared with those of other European countries at two points of time:Â 1990, just after the fall of communism, and 2017, the year of the latest available value survey. First on the list of civic values are basic attributes of liberal democracies, namely, electoral rights, civil liberties, and the rule of law. In the 2017 survey Hungary scored above the overall mean on the importance of democracy and below the mean on the state of democracy in Hungary. Furthermore, Hungary scored lowest of all countries on whether journalists provide fair coverage of elections, and below the overall mean on how fair elections are carried out in Hungary. For most themes, social capital, political tolerance, political activism, and life satisfaction, Hungary was found to be in the cluster of mainly East European countries with scores below the overall mean on both points in time. On the plus side:Â Hungary scored high on confidence in political institutions and showed a substantial increase in life satisfaction over the period. On the minus side, Hungary scored consistently very low on political activism and showed a substantial drop in ethnic tolerance between 1990 and 2017. (xsd:string)
