?:abstract
  • “It’s the economy, stupid!” Time and again the economy has been shown to influence vote in a variety of contexts. Most existing analyses explore economic voting from a valence perspective where voters reward governments in good economic times, and punish them in bad. More recently, there has been an appreciation that economic voting is multidimensional. Gaining traction is the idea that patrimony influences voter behavior, with citizens’ wealth and their possession of assets, in particular high-risk assets, increasing the likelihood of voting for parties on the right of the political spectrum. While encouraging evidence of patrimonial voting has been observed in Denmark, France, and the United States (e.g.: Nadeau et al., 2010; Stubager et al., 2013), we lack a comprehensive test across a range of countries simultaneously. This paper fills this void. Using Module 4 of the Comparative Study of Electoral Systems (CSES) and hierarchical models, the paper tests whether patrimonial voting is a cross-national phenomenon or something which is confined to just a small number of countries. The paper also explores whether patrimonial voting is mediated by macro factors including levels of economic development and social inequality as well as party politics. The paper contributes to the developing literature on patrimonial voting and has implications for understanding how economics influences vote cross-nationally. (xsd:string)
