  • "Based on face-to-face interviews of Non-German citizens in Rostock (n=357) and Mainz (n=292), the article investigates the level of social integration of foreigners in both cities, and the frequency of their negative experiences concerning discrimination. Bivariate comparisons of Rostock and Mainz show less social integration and more discrimination of foreigners in the East German city Rostock than in the West German city Mainz. The lower level of social integration of foreigners in Rostock can mainly by explained by their shorter time-period of living in Germany. Taking into account this shorter time-span of living in Germany, a further finding of the paper is that a simple (bivariate) comparison of Rostock and Mainz tends to underestimate the real quantitative and qualitative differences of foreigner-discrimination between the two cities."
