?:abstract
  • Empirical evidence of increased educational inequality due to COVID-19-related school closures is growing. More than 30 large scale student assessments worldwide (Helm et al. 2021) document learning losses and increased social disparities. At the same time, little is known about underlying mechanisms explaining these increasing disparities. The present study addresses this lack of research by means of analyses of students’ time use during school closures. Closing schools in 2020 and 2021 led to a marked expansion of students’ leisure time. Hence, students’ curricular and leisure activities gained importance for their scholastic development. While few studies have already examined the degree to which students’ daily learning time dropped due to school closures, the present study focused on investigating how students’ curricular and leisure activities changed. Specifically, the association between students’ socioeconomic background and students’ curricular and leisure activities is addressed using cross-sectional data from a parent survey (N = 3,450 parents) in Austria and longitudinal data (one measurement point at the beginning and one measurement point at the end of the school closure in spring 2020) from a student survey (N = 200 students) in Germany and Austria. The findings of a series of bivariate latent change score models indicate significant drops in students’ time spent engaging in sports activities and in school, while the amount of time spent on learning at home and with (online-)media significantly increased. The changes in time spent in school, on learning at home, and on (online-)media are significantly related to students’ socioeconomic background. The findings help explain socioeconomically driven educational inequality during the COVID-19 pandemic. (xsd:string)
