?:abstract
  • "During the period of separation, social stratification in the former Eastern and Western parts of the now unified Germany was affected by different political and economical regimes. In terms of intergenerational social mobility, various studies have shown that different trends of reproduction of social inequality were in force when the country was still divided. Our present paper addresses the development that has taken place since reunification. In the first part of the paper, we review the development of social fluidity within East and West Germany. We use uniform change models to test whether we find any converging trend between the two parts of Germany. The results are very clear: first, the level of social fluidity is much higher in the East than in the West. Second, we find no trend towards a common level of social fluidity in Germany. In the second part of the paper, we analyze why there is more social fluidity in the East. We test the influence of educational inequality and of inheritance effects. Surprisingly, none of these can give us a satisfactory explanation for the differences in the level of social fluidity. Further research is needed to understand these different levels of social fluidity." Grundlage der Analyse sind die kumulierten ALLBUS Daten 1992-2000 (xsd:string)
