?:abstract
  • This article contributes to the debate on polarization of European social structures. Unlike most studies on this topic, which take a fairly restrictive approach to job quality based solely on wage, the present research proposes a more sociological method which brings in the sector of activity and working conditions. Based on the European Union Labour Force Survey (EU-LFS) dataset and using the European Socioeconomic Groups (ESeG) classification, three patterns of change in European social structures are identified. Among the identified patterns, France belongs to the group of countries experiencing particularly strong polarisation. In addition to a rise in the proportion of the most and least skilled jobs, the country is also experiencing a sharp decline in middle-skilled jobs. Nevertheless, diverse employment trends in Europe show that, contrary to what certain studies contend, technological change cannot be the only interpretive lens through which shifts in social structure are viewed. The article goes on to provide a more fine-grained description of working conditions in lower-status jobs in the different countries under consideration. In France as well as in Southern European countries, where the expansion of lower-status jobs in the tertiary sector is especially pronounced, the working conditions of the least-skilled service sector employees appear to be particularly deteriorated.
