"Social integration of individuals with migration background succeeds in the host society among others by communication contacts and supportive interactions. Prejudices and discriminations can be reduced especially by harmless interethnic interactions and friendship ties. Therefore, interethnic contacts are a crucial issue in integration debates. Spatial living environments like communities and neighbourhoods have substantial meanings for that kind of contacts. That is because friendly contacts arise as by-products from everyday encounters in the living area. Further, contacts can maintained easily if partners live close to each other because transaction costs are low, i.e. no intensive efforts and endeavours are needed. The importance of spatial constraints and opportunities for interethnic contacts will be stressed in my presentation. Especially, I focus on community and neighbourhood levels. Constraints that arise from community size, agglomeration, and share of foreigners will be investigated on the community level. In particular, it would be interesting to show if urbanism has an effect of its own on contact behaviour rather than an effect mediated by the ethnic diversity of a community. In addition, the neighbourhood is a significant factor for interethnic contact. Subjective perceptions of ethnic diversity in the vicinity as well as ethnicity oriented living preferences of individuals might affect substantially the contact behaviour. I present quantitative analyses on the basis of the German social survey ALLBUS 2006. Multilevel modelling (individuals nested within communities) is applied to test the effects of urban constraints, neighbourhood perceptions, and living preferences on interethnic contacts of Germans with their foreign co-inhabitants."Anhand von Daten des ALLBUS 2006 werden diese Hypothesen zum Zusammenhang von Wohnumfeld, Präferenzen, Wahrnehmung der Nachbarschaft und der Kontakhäufigkeit mit ausländischen Mitbürgern untersucht.
