?:abstract
  • This paper addresses the realization of the word-final voiced obstruents /b d ɡ v z ʒ/ in English and French as foreign languages produced by learners from two groups: (a) monolingually raised German learners and (b) Turkish-German bilinguals. We analyze elicited production data recorded from the participants in all of their languages, i.e. in German (surrounding language and language of school instruction), in Turkish (the bilingual subjects’ heritage language), and in the foreign languages they learn at school, English and French. It is shown that the monolingually raised German learners largely transfer the phonological rule of final obstruent devoicing from their L1 to both FLs, which yields a high amount of non-target-like productions. The bilingual learners present a higher amount of target-like word-final voiced obstruents as compared to the German monolinguals, which we interpret in terms of positive transfer from their heritage language, Turkish. This particularly holds true for bilingual learners who present a high degree of phonological and metalinguistic awareness. We therefore argue that these individual capacities need to be fostered in multilingual learning settings. (xsd:string)
