Today’s young Eastern and Western Europeans seem to have a positive outlook on the way democracy works. This paper explores whether this is because of their young age or whether they developed these attitudes due to their political socialization under different political, economical, and social circumstances than generations in the past. According to the political socialization approach the adolescent years are most influential in the formation of political attitudes. The political changes after the end of the Cold War are expected to have influenced today’s youth in their political maturity. The central question that is investigated is whether the transition after the collapse of state socialism influenced today’s youngest Europeans during their political maturity in the 1990s. Generalized additive models are applied in order to distinguish between age, cohort and period (ACP) effects, trying to establish whether we can observe a post-Cold War generation. The analysis shows that young Europeans in the East and the West are more satisfied with the way democracy works than today’s older people. The analysis reveals a cohort effect in the West. There is no clear Cold War effect, as the changes appear gradually over birth cohorts. The cohort differences are, however, strongly visible in the East European countries, as the mid-aged citizens that were most influenced by the ‘socialist socialization’ show the lowest system support.
