  • "In this paper, we present a comprehensive overview over the development of intergenerational social mobility in West Germany from 1976-1999. We provide absolute and relative mobility rates for men, for women in the labour force and for complete tables. Discussing the results mainly for men, we find a modest, yet not significant trend towards more social fluidity, if we adopt a period perspective. However, if we adopt a cohort perspective for quasi-birth-cohorts from 1920 to 1969, we find an irregular pattern with an overall trend towards more social fluidity which fits the data significantly better than the Constant Social Fluidity model. [...] Overall, we provide three reasons why we think it is much more appropriate -at least in the German case- to analyse social fluidity in a cohort rather than in a period perspective: First, we are able to cover a longer time span (we developed an 'Age-Cohort-Period design' that tries to seperate cohort effects from age effects). Second, we are able to recognise historical peculiarities that only affected certain cohorts and thus influenced the development of social mobility for these cohorts only. Third, and maybe most important, we are able to adequately assess the predominant role of education in the process of social mobility."
