  • "The following contribution analyses the extent to which this aim was realized by means of town planning and where the reasons for its limits can be seen. Therefore the underlying idea of "space" and its meaning for social processes has to be revised and a new sociological understanding of the constitution of space shows that it no longer can be conceptionalized as a neutral three dimensional container. As a result the main argument of this paper claims that the concept of urbanity realized in Tübingen represents only the ideal of "good urban life" of a certain social milieu.[...] The results presented here are part of a study carried out from 2000 until 2003 at Freiburg University. The object of this study was the Französische Viertel, one part of the bigger town development area in Tübingen. In the field-exploring phase nine qualitative interviews were made with different experts of the quarter on its problems and achievements. The broader quantitative survey interviewed all households of this area (n=283) and all households of the neighbouring to-be-developed area "Stuttgarter Straße" (n=33) which is inhabited mainly by foreigners of a marginal socio-economical status[...] The results and the comparison with the representative German survey ALLBUS 2000 show a large overrepresentation of the well-educated modernized milieus for the Französisches Viertel so it has to be assumed that this quarter attracts certain social groups more than others."
