?:abstract
  • The crisis recently experienced in EU has led to important labour changes on gender. One of the most important guidelines has been the existence of a decrease in labour segregation, known as “levelling down”. In this paper, is analysed the occupational and sectoral segregation by gender in a selection of EU countries (Spain, Italy, Portugal, France and Germany). Specifically, a first descriptive analysis is carried out about the general evolution of labour segregation using the quarterly data from the Labor Force Survey (LFS) from 2008 to 2015. Subsequently, the segregation curves for each country and their evolutions are estimated. Finally, is developed a model about the probability of being employed in a segregated occupation-sector. The first findings show that segregation maintains an acyclic behaviour in accordance with the patter and duration of the crisis in each country, but always with a persistent character. Segregation has fallen not only because of the sectoral crisis experienced in construction and industry. Moreover, the job relocation or hiring new workers is key to reducing segregation.
