Cross-national quantitative researchers often have to rely on secondary data of large international surveys such as those of the International Social Survey Programme (ISSP). As the scholar usually has no influence on the practices data collecting institutions apply for their data collection, a primary interest of any researcher should be an assessment of data quality. This article investigates the problem of duplicated data as an issue of institutional practices in the International Social Survey Programme 2010. First, principal component analysis (PCA) provides initial evidence that in some country samples duplicated cases are present. A closer investigation of the actual response patterns, separately for each country sample, shows that indeed in some of the participating countries data duplication is a serious issue.
