  • European elections provide potentially important prospects for electoral change, and thus for affecting the subsequent development of domestic politics. This may seem like a somewhat surprising perspective on elections that are mainly characterized by a low intensity of campaigning, by scant media attention, and by shallow voter involvement. Yet from previous European elections we know that the outcomes of European elections can indeed affect the domestic political landscape, the more so the larger their divergence is with previous national elections. European elections have been referred to as the 'midwife assisting in the birth of new parties', on occasion they effectuated the replacement of party leaders or changes in parties' stances on important issues, and they have at times altered the internal relations of governing coalitions. In short, the results of European elections and changes in party support that become visible in European elections have important consequences for domestic politics. (xsd:string)
