?:abstract
  • Focuses on two main questions. First, have the citizens of modern representative democracies been abandoned by their political parties? Second, have the parties entered an era of crisis in which their traditional linkage functions are no longer performed? The evidence points firmly to a negative answer to each. The positions of the parties match the orientations of their supporters rather well. To the extent that if there is change, it is in the direction of increasingly accurate representation of popular wishes by those collective élites who define the purpose and direct the actions of political parties in modern representative democracies.
