?:abstract
  • The systemic approach is most fully manifested in the compilation of various types of typologies and classifications. In this article, we will consider the implementation of a systemic approach to determining cultural distance in the typology of World Values Research (WVR). The results of the WVS in Russia for 2017–2022 (7 th wave), which are publicly available are considered. R. Inglehart (curator and author of the World Values Study) implements a systematic approach in his diagram in the space of two multicomponent factors: traditional/secular-rational values and values of survival/self expression. The entire social and cultural space is divided for us into I and the Other. This division is carried out on visible and invisible signs in a complex process of identification/self-identification. Cultural distance in the form of markers determines the uniqueness and difference of one’s culture or subculture from another. Diacritics of cultural distance can be different signs, while the native language and religion are recognized as the basic ones. Most of these signs are significant only in the complex. Moreover, they are constantly changing. R. Inglehart rethought the theory of modernization, proving that with the growth of existential security in modern society, post-materialistic values inevitably transform into secular values and values of self-expression. The World Values Survey 2017–2022 was conducted on 290 thematic issues. As a result, it was revealed that indicators of attitudes towards other races, nationalities, and speakers of other languages are closely inter- related with a religious factor. In this classification, the religious factor is the basic one for determining cultural distance, which is proved by the results of a study on Russia. In Russian conditions, the religious factor becomes even more significant due to the fact that the majority of respondents recognize that religion and religious institutions play either a significant or important role in their lives.
