?:abstract
  • Cultural codes, as a structured manifestation of cultural phenomena, are actualized during the rapid development of intercultural communication in the twentieth century. The main cultural codes include language and religion. To identify changes in religious value orientations in Russia, we analyzed data from mass surveys of the World Values Survey, which are in the public domain. The author analyzed databases on Russia for 1995 (3rd wave of research) and 2017 (7th wave of research). In 1995, Russia was just beginning to develop its Internet communications, 2017 describes the modern value orientations of Russians. French philosophers J. Deleuze and F. Guattari introduced the concept of rhizome as a symbol of poststructuralism and postmodernism. Rhizome implies a system where there is no hierarchy, centralization, linearity, orderliness. In the Internet era, the rhizomorphism of communications leads to a weakening of the traditional hierarchy, to a relatively low level of institutionalization, which is becoming a noticeable phenomenon in Russian religious denominations. Traditional cultural codes such as language and religion are inevitably transformed in the conditions of the Internet. The phenomenon of translinguality, partial loss of linguistic purity and the creation of new language hybrids characterize the development of language codes. The emergence of a virtual religious culture, the rhizomorphism of communication processes in the modern church, create more individualized, nonlinear forms of ritual, which inevitably weaken the principle of hierarchical centralization in religious organizations. In general, it can be noted that Russia’s movement towards the values of self-expression and individualism is accompanied by the rhizome effect, which manifests itself both in hybrid linguistic forms and in the weakening of hierarchical religious institutionalization.
