?:abstract
  • A novice reader of the scholarly literature on the economic vote would likely over- estimate its effect. Publishing bias ensures that positive findings far outnumber null findings. This essay provides an unvarnished investigation into the basic relationship between economic performance and voting in both the literature and in an analysis of election results in 23 OECD countries. Intended as an introduction to the topic, it discusses the importance of economic voting to electoral accountability and considers the classic questions of whether voters punish and/or reward elected representatives for economic performance. It further considers the contexts that condition the economic vote and explicitly examines one moderating factor: the level of economic globalization. The effect of the economy on the vote is both disconcertingly sporadic and the best empirical evidence of electoral accountability. (xsd:string)
