  • "[...] Thus, the main purpose of this chapter is to analyse change in social class inequality in educational attainment in Sweden, Germany and Britain. The disadvantages associated with class background are not only the ones of interest - sex differences in educational attainment also violate the goal of equality of opportunity. [...] In this chapter we accomplish several things. Firstly we set out the stylised facts about trends in class inequality of educational attainment in Sweden, Germany and Britain over more than half of the twentieth century. In doing that, we use Sweden - where we know that an equalization has taken place - as a yardstick against which we compare the trends, if any, in Germany and Britain. We then establish the stylised facts concerning the trend in sex differences. [...] Next we give an answer to a different but related question. The attenuation that we can demonstrate in class inequality is nowhere near sufficient to wipe out current day class differences. Class origin is still a powerful predictor of educational life-chances in all three nations. [...] In comparing nations we analyse class differences in educational attainment couched both in absolute and relative terms, since we believe that both these dimensions are important for the life-chances of individuals."
