?:abstract
  • Models of vote choice usually assume that all voters act according to a certain model. However, as voters are heterogeneous, it is likely that different voters follow different decision rules. In this paper we examine, if voters with different personalities use different models to come up with their electoral decision. Doing so, we try to connect political psychology with rational choice models. We argue that voters’ personalities affect their political sophistication and their perception how important it is to decide to vote for a party. Sophistication and perceived importance of the task, in turn, affect the choice of the decision-making strategy. Applied to proximity and compensational voting, we would thus expect voters who are open to new experiences or emotionally stable to have more political knowledge and more interest in the election and thus decide according to the more demanding model, namely compensational voting. Testing our hypotheses with data from the German Longitudinal Election Study GLES, we find some effects of personality traits on decision-making strategies that are not always the effects we expect, but nevertheless are promising enough to encourage further research.
