  • "From existing studies we have learned that political knowledge tends to affect democratic participation. The positive relationship between political knowledge and political participation holds for countries as well as for individuals. However, there remains a gaping hole when it comes to our understanding of the impact on political participation of general familiarity with politics across different areas. But the value of political knowledge for political participation is situational. This paper uses the logic of the resource-perspective and takes it one step further. It assumes that different types of knowledge differ in their effect on involvement in different kinds of political participation. By using the 2008 German General Social Survey (ALLBUS) this paper shows that a high level of knowledge of political figures goes along with election turnout, while knowledge of the rules of the game above all affects the extent to which citizens participate in a 'problem-oriented' way and engage in protest activities.
