One of the most popular candidate strategy in televised debates is to attack the political opponent. Research on U.S. presidential debates found that about four out of ten candidate statements are attacks. The share of negativity varies but has not increased in the long run. There are indications that the particular candidate profile and the specific context of a debate might increase the use of negative statements. Yet the factors causing candidates to attack each other are unknown. This is especially true for German televised debates. Though American-style TV debates were held since 2002 on the national level and since 1997 at the state level we have almost no information about candidate strategies in federal elections. Research on televised debates aired in the run-up to state elections are rare. The aim of this paper is to increase the knowledge about extent and the correlates of negativity in German televised debates. To do so, we use content analyses of all televised debates (N=38) held on the state or the national level since 1997. We focus on the correlates of negativity in televised debates. By coding the content of every single statement we present data on the exact share of negativity and its development over time. We shed some light on potential explanations for the use of attack strategies. We will test the impact of three groups of factors: candidate profile (e.g., sex, age, experience, political role, party attachment), strategic context (e.g., poor results in public opinion polls, candidates will be partners in a grand coalition after election), and formal debate context (e.g., debate format, timing of a debate, level of election).
