  • Summary In this chapter, we discuss the process of input and output harmonization in the East Asian Social Survey (EASS) project, which designs a common module and creates integrated data from China, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan since 2003. A module of about 60 questions is incorporated biennially into the recurring social surveys, such as Chinese General Social Survey, Japanese General Social Survey, Korean General Social Survey, and Taiwan Social Change Survey, all of which are modeled after the U.S. General Social Survey. Input harmonization is implemented for deciding module theme, subtopics and questions, choosing standard background variables (SBVs), and setting response categories and their translations. Ex-ante output harmonization is used for some SBVs, such as religious affiliation, education, and occupation. Because three teams except Japan participate in the International Social Survey Program (ISSP), extra effort is needed in harmonization when the themes of the two surveys overlap. As there are variations in response tendencies among four societies, the EASS teams chose to use seven-point scales for most of the attitudinal questions. Even with great care, our harmonization is not perfect. The comparison table, which enlists EASS variable names, target populations, and question numbers in source surveys, is a useful reference for data users. (xsd:string)
