  • This paper estimates the gender wage gap for a set of OECD contries, using PIAAC data. To do this we apply the Oaxaca-Blinder methodology, that allows to divide the average gender wage gap into two components: the explained component, referred to the part of the gap due to differences by gender in endowments, and the unexplained component, referred to the part of the gap due to differences in returns. As a novelty, the paper provides two extreme values for the part of the gap identified as discrimination, depending on the functional specification of the model and assuming that the explanatory variables included in the wage equation can also be affected by discrimination. Our results point to Estonia, Slovak Republic, Japan and Korea as those countries showing highest gender wage discrimination; by opposite, the lowest discrimination correspond to Ireland, Belgium, Denmark and the Netherlands. The difference among the extreme values of discrimination is especially marked in some countries, with Japan standing out as the country with a gender wage discrimination most depending on the functional specification of the model.
