  • Using survey data from the National Identity III survey, a part of the International Social Survey Programme, this thesis has examined factors that shape the attitudes of individuals towards international trade in a comparative study of Denmark and Korea. The factor-endowments model has been tested for both countries using highest degree of education, personal income and household income as variables. In the case of Denmark, the model holds true for all three variables where higher level of education, higher personal income and higher household income all lead to a higher preference for international trade. In Korea, the same has been found for highest degree of education and personal income, while household income cannot be used to predict Korean individuals’ attitudes towards trade. Political affiliation was found to be a decisive predictor in the case of Denmark where individuals who voted for a right wing party in the last general election were less in favor of trade. The same was the case in Korea, although the difference between left-wing and right-wing voters was small. For religious affiliation, the results showed that religious individuals, in general, were more against trade in both countries. In the case of Korea, Catholics were an exception with the most favorable attitudes towards trade of all groups. Likewise in Korea, Buddhists were found to be the most anti-trade group among all the categories of religious affiliation. (xsd:string)
