?:abstract
  • The role of protest in populist right-wing voting is often taken as a given; however, little is known about the relative importance of different protest motives, their drivers, and their variations. Examining the case of the German populist radical-right, the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD), the present thesis makes a contribution by a) testing the relative effect of different protest dimensions, b) analyzing the degree that protest is driven by anti-immigrant sentiment, and c) exploring variation of protest motives between East and West, as well as in contrast to the radical left. A conceptual distinction is drawn between systemic protest (dissatisfaction with democracy) and elite protest (dissatisfaction with government in particular, and established parties more generally). A mediation analysis serves to determine whether and to what extent protest is issue-driven. Firstly, the findings suggest that while it is clearly a combination of both systemic and elite protest that motivates the AfD vote, it is dissatisfaction with elites, and especially dissatisfaction with established parties, that has the strongest impact on pushing voters to the populist radical-right. Secondly, the mediation analysis clearly confirms that anti-immigrant sentiment is a driver of protest; however, the strongest mediation occurs through systemic protest, suggesting that for AfD voters, the refugee issue stands for a systemic lack of responsiveness to, and exclusion of their interests from the democratic consensus.
