  • The paper examines whether the rise of female labor-force participation and the change of sex-roles are mutually dependent developments. Data base for this analysis is the International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) from 1988 carried out in Austria, Germany (FRG), Great Britain, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands and the USA. The comparison of these countries does not confirm the assumption that the higher the employment-rate of women in a particular country the more the population will have egalitarian views of gender-roles. These discrepancies can be explained by the fact that employment-rates of women are determined to a high degree by a country's economic situation, whereas the change of sex-role attitudes seems to go together with long-term developments towards democratisation and individualistic life-styles. The sooner this process has started in a country, the more the traditional role of women is rejected today. In all countries, however, a strong change towards egalitarian sex-role attitudes has taken place from the elder to the younger age-cohorts. (xsd:string)
