?:abstract
  • Many studies have shown that graduating from school during a recession can have lasting negative effects on labor market outcomes, known as the "scarring effect." This paper focuses on overeducation as a factor contributing to the scarring effect and aims to uncover the mechanism behind it. Using individual-level data for workers in Japan, where both scarring effects and overeducation are observed, our simple econometric analysis indicates that overeducation partially mitigates the scarring effect for those with higher education levels, while the penalty for undereducation exacerbates the scarring effect for those with lower education levels.
